This prize-winning work combines colour and Persian calligraphy with lines of Persian poetry. It is one of my signature styles.
A piece of Persian poetry phrase is repeatedly written and elaborated and expanded with the movements used in Persian calligraphy on a watercolour background. If you know the language and look closely, you will see the words.
Poetry is hugely important in Iran, with a long history of calligraphy and spoken word. The phrase “تو ای نایاب، ای ناب، مرا دریاب” has been written in this work.
It can be likened to a request for a “Being” that is believed to have infinite power and control. The meaning is a combination of these phrases: “You the Rare, oh pure one, take care of me/pay attention to me/protect me/look out for me”.
